Product introduction
Dispercoll BL XP 2514 is an aqueous dispersion of latent reactive solid isocyanate (TDI dimer).
Dispercoll BL XP 2514 can be used in combination with Dispercoll U as a crosslinking component for the formulation of one-component latent reactive polyurethane dispersion adhesives. Dispercoll BL XP 2514 is heat sensitive and should not be heated to >25°C, nor should it be transported and stored at >25°C. Carbon dioxide can be produced at elevated temperatures, resulting in increased pressure in sealed, air-tight containers.

Precautions
The pH of Dispercoll BL XP 2514 decreases during storage. Elevated storage temperatures accelerate this process. CO2 gas generation is expected at pH < 8.0; this may lead to increased pressure in the sealed container. Therefore, the product is supplied in containers with seals allowing gas exchange.
safe disposal method
At elevated temperatures, films containing TDI dimers can release TDI (toluene diisocyanate). The release of TDI is a function of the amount and duration of high temperature. Although our investigations during the application of Dispercoll U 53 / Dispercoll BL XP 2514 (workplace: 3D printing machine) found no evidence of TDI release in the exhaust air of the thermoforming unit, the study in the Vötsch climate chamber also found no evidence of TDI release. Signs Composites formulated with Dispercoll U 53 / Dispercoll BL XP 2514 (furniture parts, door side panels (automotive)), we have developed a modified Dispercoll U 53 that significantly reduces TDI release in dry adhesive films , while maintaining adhesive properties similar to Dispercoll U 53. Modified formulations of Dispercoll U 53 will be available upon request.
TDS/GC analysis according to VDA 278 (VOC: 90°C/30min) gives the following typical results * Combination of Dispercoll BL XP 2514/Dispercoll U:
a) Dispercoll U 53
5% Dispercoll BL XP 2514: about 400 ppm TDI
10% Dispercoll BL XP 2514: about 1,700 ppm TDI
b) Improved Dispercoll U 53
5% Dispercoll BL XP 2514: <10ppm TDI
10% Dispercoll BL XP 2514: about 100 ppm TDI
*Mixtures of Dispercoll U with other polymer dispersions or addition of aggregating substances or additives to latent reactive binder dispersions can affect TDI release.
Properties/Applications
Due to the high density of TDI dimer particles relative to the aqueous phase, these particles precipitate during storage. Therefore, containers of Dispercoll BL XP 2514 must be homogenized prior to product removal. Dispercoll BL XP 2514 contains a thickening agent that slows but does not completely prevent the precipitation of TDI dimer particles.
Dispercoll BL XP 2514 can be stirred into Dispercoll U without applying high shear forces. The formulations thus prepared are potentially reactive after drying. Crosslinking of such films can be initiated by brief thermal activation. The addition of suitable thickeners is recommended to adjust the rheological properties of the mixture to retard or prevent precipitation of TDI dimer particles.
Potentially reactive polyurethane dispersion adhesive formulated with Dispercoll BL XP 2514 is temperature sensitive! Carbon dioxide forms at temperatures >25°C, which can lead to dangerous pressure build-up in sealed, air-tight containers. Avoid transport and storage below freezing (0°C).
At maximum, the formulations of Dispercoll U and Dispercoll BL XP 2514 will remain stable for several weeks. The product temperature was observed to be 25°C. There is no need to consider the "pot life" of two-component applications using polymer dispersions with liquid, hydrophilically modified crosslinker isocyanates. Various additives can have a profound effect on formulation stability. Formulation stability must be tested on a case-by-case basis. Acids and solvents in particular should be avoided as additives, as they can lead to condensation and/or the generation of CO2 gas. The following substances are recommended for the formulation of potentially reactive substances:
Polyurethane Dispersion:
100 pbw Dispercoll U (40-50% polymer content)
3 - 7 pbw Dispercoll BL XP 2514
After the adhesive coating has dried, the crosslinking reaction is initiated by thermal activation. Adhesive properties such as heat resistance are a function of the application conditions and the dispersion used.
storage
Store in original sealed container.
Recommended storage temperature: 5 - 25°C.
Protection from frost, heat and foreign objects.
General Information: This product is temperature sensitive! Carbon dioxide forms at temperatures > 25°C, which can lead to dangerous pressure build-up in sealed, air-tight containers. Avoid transport and storage below freezing (0°C).
The product should only be stored in a well-ventilated area. The reference operations in section 7 of the safety manual must be followed.
storage time
For a period of four months after the date of shipment as stated in the corresponding shipping document, the product will meet the specifications or values specified in the "Specifications or Characteristic Data" section above, where applicable, and the product will be stored in full as described and referenced in the "Storage" section above storage conditions and otherwise dispose of properly.
Failure over a four-month period does not necessarily mean that the product no longer meets specifications or setpoints. However, it is recommended that such products be tested if they still meet specifications or setpoints before using them. After the four-month period, Covestro makes no representations about the product and the manufacturer is not responsible or liable for the failure of the product to meet specifications or set values after the four-month period.
Package
Plastic container, 18kg content; cover with pressure relief. Open type with closed ring for 200kg content and vent valve on lid.
Containers must be transported and stored upright with lid on top. The condition of the container and lid must be checked regularly.
dispose of
When handling Dispercoll BL XP 2514 or a latent reactive adhesive dispersion formulated with Dispercoll BL XP 2514, CO generation can lead to pressure build-up in tightly sealed waste containers. Therefore, the NCO group of the TDI dimer should be destroyed by reaction with ammonia.
The following procedures for eliminating NCO groups have been shown to be effective in our laboratory:
Dispercoll BL XP 2514:
First make sure that the total weight of the filled container reaches the maximum value. 2/3 full. Add 20pbw of ammonia solution (24% NH3) relative to 100pbw gross weight. Stir the contents of the container. There will be a slight warming within an hour. Airtight containers can be discarded after cooling.
Latent Reactive Dispersion Adhesives:
First make sure that the total weight of the filled container reaches the maximum value. 2/3 full. Add 5pbw of ammonia solution (24% NH3) relative to 100pbw gross weight. Stir the contents of the container. There will be a slight warming within an hour. Airtight containers can be discarded after cooling. Unusable product residues must be disposed of in an incinerator according to local regulations. Industry-specific waste codes from the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) should be used. See Material Safety Data Sheets for details. Outside the areas covered by German packaging regulations, carefully emptied packaging can be disposed of in local or industrial incinerators. Hazard labels must not be removed without first decontaminating the packaging.
Labeling and statutory requirements
This product data sheet is to be used only with the latest version of the corresponding safety data sheet. Updating of safety-related information in accordance with statutory requirements will only be reflected in safety data sheets, copies of which will be revised and distributed. Information on current classification and labelling, application and handling methods and other safety-relevant data can be found in the currently valid safety data sheets.
more information
This product is mainly used as a curing agent in coatings or adhesives. Handling of coatings or adhesives containing reactive polyisocyanates and residual monomeric TDI requires appropriate protection as mentioned in the safety data sheets. Therefore, these products may only be used in industrial or commercial applications. They are not suitable for homework (DIY) applications.
