Purpose
Formulation of Two-Component Polyurethane Coatings and Adhesives
Storage stability
The hardener must be kept in an airtight container. Whenever product is transferred from one container to another, moisture (including air moisture) must be prevented from entering. Therefore, when a small amount of product is to be used frequently, it should not be taken from a large shipping container, but should be taken from a specially designed bottle of appropriate volume. In addition to the original container, twist jars made of aluminium or glass are particularly suitable for storing curing agents. Suitable caps include screw caps with gaskets. Gaskets made of materials that release alkaline substances are not suitable. Crystals will form when the product is stored at low temperatures, but will dissolve when heated slowly (to room temperature).
product Safety
The curing agent is composed of polyisocyanate and ethyl acetate, the former has low volatility and the latter is volatile and flammable. Therefore, precautions appropriate for use with readily available organic solvents must be taken. The dust mist produced when working with adhesives containing curing agents must be removed with an exhaust fan to ensure that there is no risk of inhalation.
compatibility
Solvents that can be used to dilute the curing agent are: methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and toluene. All these solvents must be free of water and alcohol.
Purpose
Properly formulated two-component adhesives have a limited pot life after the addition of the curing agent and, therefore, must be used before the expiration date. The above pot life depends not only on the polymer content of the adhesive, but also on other ingredients such as resins, antioxidants and solvents. After the pot life expires, which typically lasts from a few hours to a working day, the adhesive becomes increasingly difficult to process, and its viscosity rises rapidly until the formulation eventually gels irreversibly.
