pay attention
The surface treatment of some organic pigments can adversely affect the effectiveness of this wetting and dispersing additive. In this case, try untreated pigments of the same type.
When used in coil coatings, the interaction between the cationic additive and the acid catalyst must be considered. Free or epoxy blocked acids are more suitable than amine blocked acids. This problem can be avoided by using the DISPER BYK-170 series.
Application: coating industry
Features and Benefits
The high molecular weight additives deflocculate and stabilize pigments through steric hindrance. DISPER BYK-163 provides the same charge to the pigment particles. The resulting repulsive force and steric stabilization can effectively avoid possible co-flocculation, so that the multi-pigment system does not produce color floating and blooming. The additive's deflocculating properties increase the gloss, color strength, clarity and hiding power of the coating while reducing the viscosity of the millbase.
Recommended Applications
DISPER BYK-163 has broad compatibility and can be used in various solvent-borne formulations. Can also be used for post remediation of problematic paints. For some new applications, newer additives such as DISPER BYK-2163 and DISPER BYK-2164 are recommended.
Recommended dosage
Auxiliary dosage (as purchased) based on pigment:
Inorganic Pigments |
15-20 % |
Titanium dioxide |
4-5 % |
organic pigment |
30-60 % |
carbon black |
80-100 % |
The above data are empirical dosages, and the optimal dosage needs to be determined through a series of tests.
Incorporation Method and Processing Instructions
For optimum performance, the additive should be added to the millbase first, followed by the pigment. The resin and solvent components of the millbase are premixed first, and then the additives are slowly added with constant stirring. Do not add pigments before the additives are evenly mixed. Problematic coatings can be remedied by post-addition, which requires slow addition under high shear conditions.
