Features/Applications
Desmolac® 4340 X/iB is primarily used as a physically drying binder for formulating topcoats for flexible substrates such as polyurethanes and primers for solvent-sensitive plastics such as polycarbonates. Pigment dispersions such as Bayderm® Colours B-TO and C-TO (Bayer) are recommended for colour formulations. Standard pigments or pigment/filler combinations can also be used. The solvent resistance of coatings based on Desmolac® 4340 X/iB can be greatly improved by the addition of Desmodur® N 75 (10 to 20 % on solid resin basis). This can lead to post-crosslinking of the film with moisture in the air after 1 to 2 weeks. However, Desmodur® N 75 should only be added prior to coating application to prevent it from reacting with isobutanol in the mixed solvent as supplied.
compatibility
In general, Desmolac® 4340 X/iB can be mixed with the following products: Aliphatic polyisocyanates such as Desmodur® N 100, N 75, ultra N 3300 and N 3390; Aromatic polyisocyanates such as Desmodur® L/ultra L, HL and IL/ultra IL; low viscosity nitrocellulose and vinyl copolymers. However, formulations must always be tested for compatibility. Desmolac® 4340 X/iB is incompatible with polyvinyl butyral, cellulose acetate butyrate or cellulose propionate.
Solubility/Dilution
Desmolac® 4340 X/iB can be thinned to about 10% solids with aromatics, esters and ketones. It can be diluted almost infinitely with mixtures of aromatic hydrocarbons and low boiling alcohols (1:1). In general, the product has good compatibility with the above solvents, but the storage stability of the formulated solutions needs to be tested.
store
- Store in original Covestro airtight containers.
- Recommended storage temperature: 40°C max
